Biography

Thibaud Vergé has a PhD in Economics from the Toulouse School of Economics and a degree from the Ecole Polytechnique. He began his career as a Lecturer in Economics at the universities of Bristol (2000-2002) and Southampton (2002-2005). In 2005, he joined the Center for Research in Economics and Statistics (CREST) in Paris where he worked as a researcher for five years.

In February 2010, he became Chief Economist at the Autorité de la concurrence, and during these three years had the opportunity to work on major cartels (bank cards, detergents, flour, commodity chemicals, etc.), abuses of a dominant position (Fret SNCF, Plavix, Subutex, mobile telephony (SRR and on-net/off-net), etc.) and mergers (Casino/Monoprix, Eurovia/Tarmac, Veolia/Transdev, Point.P/Brossette, etc.). He also contributed, alongside the Investigation Services, to numerous opinions or sector-specific studies, the drafting and implementation of the procedural notice on fines, the Autorité's work within the ECN network and the OECD. In 2012 and 2013, he chaired the Association of Competition Economics, which aims to facilitate exchanges between competition economists from all backgrounds (government bodies and authorities, consultants and academics).

In May 2013, Thibaud Vergé joined ENSAE Paris as a Professor of Economics. In addition to his teaching and research activities (especially in competition economics), he was responsible for several academic programmes (doctoral programme in Economics and Master of research  in Economics at the Institut Polytechnique de Paris) and Coordinator of the "Data Science for Economics, Finance and Management" university research school (joint project of the Institut Polytechnique de Paris and HEC Paris). Since 2013, he has been a visiting professor at the Bergen Center for Competition Law and Economics (and at the Norwegian School of Economics and then at the University of Bergen) and from 2017 to 2019 was also teaching at the Ecole Polytechnique. He has also been a member of the Economic Advisory Group for Competition Policy at DG Competition since 2020.

As Vice-President of the Autorité de la concurrence from 27 December 2022, Thibaud Vergé will continue to hold teaching positions, notably at ENSAE Paris.
