By decree of the President of the French Republic of 20 May 2025, Muriel Lacoue-Labarthe, senior judge at the French Court of Auditors (Cour des comptes), has been appointed to the Board of the Autorité de la concurrence, as one of its appointees drawn from current or former members of the French Administrative Supreme Court (Conseil d’État), the French Supreme Court (Cour de cassation), the French Court of Auditors (Cour des comptes) or other administrative or judicial courts, to replace Jean-Baptiste Gourdin, who has resigned to take up an appointment as President of the French national music centre (Centre national de la musique). The Autorité warmly thanks Jean-Baptiste Gourdin for his commitment and wishes him every success in his new role.

Biography

A graduate of the École nationale d’administration (ENA) (“Nelson Mandela” graduating class) and the public service section of the 1997 graduating class at the Institut d’études politiques de Paris (IEP Paris), Muriel Lacoue-Labarthe began her career in 2001 at the Directorate General for Competition Policy, Consumer Affairs and Fraud Control (DGCCRF), where she served as Deputy Head and then Head of the Merger Control and State Aid unit. In 2005, she joined the European Commission as seconded national expert at the Directorate General for Competition.

Returning to Paris in 2007, she joined the General Secretariat for European Affairs (SGAE) as Head of the Internal Market, Consumers, Competition, State Aid and Arms sector. In 2010, she joined the Treasury as Head of the European Coordination and Strategy unit, before serving as adviser to the Minister of the Economy and Finance between 2012 and 2014.

She was then appointed Deputy Head of European Affairs at the Treasury from 2014 to 2016, before returning to the European Commission for one year as adviser to the Director of Policy, Strategy, Coordination and Communication at the Directorate General for Economic and Financial Affairs.

From 2017 to 2024, she held a number of successive roles at the Treasury:

  • Deputy Head of Trade Policy, Investment and the Fight against Financial Crime (2017-2020);
  • Head of Bilateral Economic Relations and Export Finance (2020-2021);
  • Deputy Director General of the Treasury (2021-2024).

She was a member of the Board of the European Investment Bank (EIB) between September 2014 and December 2015 and then April 2023 and June 2024.

Since July 2024, Muriel Lacoue-Labarthe has been senior judge at the French Court of Auditors (Cour des comptes).

As a reminder, the Board of the Autorité is made up of 17 members with irrevocable terms of office. The President and the four Vice-Presidents perform their duties on a full-time basis, while the 12 other members are non-permanent.

The members are drawn from both the public and private spheres: consequently judges, professors, economic leaders, and representatives of professional and consumer organisations share their points of view during deliberations.
