Mathias Pigeat is appointed Head of the Legal Department of the Autorité de la concurrence.

Mathias Pigeat has been appointed as Head of the Legal Department of the Autorité de la concurrence. He was previously Chief of Staff of the President of the Autorité and its European and international affairs. He succeeds Juliette Théry-Schultz.

The Autorité warmly thanks Juliette Théry-Schultz for everything she brought during her 14 years of service, in particular as Deputy General Rapporteur (audiovisual, finances, agriculture) and Head of the Legal Department, and wishes her every success in her new role as member of the CSA (French Broadcasting Regulator).

 

Biography


Mathias Pigeat holds a Master's degree in Public Business Law (2007) from the University of Paris 1 Pantheon-Sorbonne and a Master's degree in International Law and Management (2009) from HEC Paris. He obtained his CAPA in 2011.

After several years practising as a lawyer specialising in competition law, within White & Case LLP, then participating in two entrepreneurial projects in the gastronomy sector, he joined the Autorité as Adviser in charge of European affairs in the Office of the President of the Autorité in January 2016, before becoming Chief of Staff of the President of the Autorité and its European and international affairs in October 2017. In this capacity, Mathias Pigeat has been involved in monitoring the work of the European Competition Network (ECN), the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the International Competition Network (ICN).

In the context of legislative and regulatory monitoring, he has contributed to the elaboration of several structural reforms that have reinforced the effectiveness of the Autorité de la concurrence, including the negotiation of the ECN+ Directive, the modernisation provisions of competition law contained in the law 2020-1508 of 3 December 2020 regarding various provisions for adaptation to European Union law in economic and financial matters (known as DDADUE). Mathias pigeat also contributed to the signing of a common agreement between the G7 competition authorities on “Competition law and digital economy”. Finally, he took a significative part to different discussions on digital topics led by the Autorité or in which it takes part at national or European level, notably The French Digital Conference or regarding the implementation of Article 22 of Regulation No 139/2004 on the European merger control.
